When I was a little girl, I heard the voices and felt the presence of spirits all around me. Rose was the first one to speak her name. She followed me everywhere.
She sent the butterflies and whispering winds by my bedroom window to announce her arrival. We would then talk about ideas far beyond my understanding.
I played with my dolls while Rose taught me things from the unseen realms.
Sometimes my mom asked who I was talking to. I would always tell her the same story, and she would always shake her head in disbelief, passing off my declarations as a child with an overactive imagination.
After awhile, my family grew uncomfortable with my assertions of invisible friends and tried to make me conform to the ways of the world.
And then I began to forget.

Years passed. I grew shy and apprehensive of a world still largely asleep. My voice had gone quiet, although it was constantly speaking inside my head.
I became like Alice through the looking glass, venturing deeper and deeper within. It felt safe in that place, in the depth of my interior space.
I went about my business in the world - the business of making money, marriage and family, searching for my place in the American dream. But something was missing.
I lived my life according to plan - until one day - when the tower came crashing down around me. There were pieces everywhere, and picking them up was painful.
And then I began to remember...
